Setting up the whitelist, banning/kicking players and using OP

Minecraft

1. What the whitelist is

The whitelist is a list of players allowed to join the server. When it's enabled, only the players on it can connect — everyone else is rejected automatically.

2. Enabling the whitelist

There are two ways to enable it:

  • Through the server.properties file: in the Files tab, edit the file and change the field:

white-list=false

change it to

white-list=true

  • Or from the console, by typing the command:
  whitelist on

3. Adding players to the whitelist

In the server console, use:

  whitelist add <player_name>

Example:

  whitelist add Steve123

4. Removing players from the whitelist

  whitelist remove <player_name>

To see all allowed players:

  whitelist list
ℹ️ Tip: You can also edit the whitelist directly in the whitelist.json file in the Files tab — handy for adding several players at once.

5. Banning players

To stop a player from joining the server (regardless of the whitelist):

  ban <player_name> <reason>

Example:

ban Steve123 Toxic behavior in chat

To ban by IP (prevents the person from joining with another account):

  ban-ip <ip_address>

6. Unbanning players

  pardon <player_name>
  pardon-ip <ip_address>

7. Kicking players

Unlike a ban, a kick only removes the player from the server right now, without stopping them from joining again:

  kick <player_name> <reason>

8. Granting and removing OP

OP (operator) gives the player access to the server's administrative commands.

  op <player_name>

To remove it:

  deop <player_name>
⚠️ Warning: OP grants full access to the server, including commands that can wipe builds or ban other players. Only give it to people you trust. For finer-grained permission control, use a plugin such as LuckPerms.

9. Checking banned players and operators

You can check the lists directly in the files in the Files tab:

  • banned-players.json — list of banned players.
  • banned-ips.json — list of banned IPs.
  • ops.json — list of operators.
  • whitelist.json — list of whitelisted players.
